David Hemsoll reveals the ways in which significant differences in imitative strategy distinguished the period's leading architects from each other and argues for a more nuanced understanding of the widely accepted trope--first articulated by Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century--that Renaissance architecture evolved through a linear step-by-step assimilation of antiquity. Offering an in-depth examination of the complex, sometimes contradictory, and often contentious ways that Renaissance architects approached the antique, this meticulously researched study brings to life a cacophony of voices and opinions that have been lost in the simplified Vasarian narrative and presents a fresh and comprehensive account of Renaissance architecture in both Florence and Rome.

Author: David Hemsoll
ISBN-10: 0300225768
ISBN-13: 9780300225761
Publisher: Yale University Press
Language: English
Published: 12/10/2019
Pages: 352
Format: Hardcover
Weight: 2.70lbs
Size: 10.20h x 7.40w x 1.10d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_0a5bf7c8-6cfb-4acd-b971-c5fbc63e50cf.jpg?v=1680621338
bramantes-tempietto-the-roman-renaissance-jack-freiberg-9781107042971
Bramante's Tempietto, the Roman Renaissance, and the Spanish Crown
The Tempietto, the embodiment of the Renaissance mastery of classical architecture and its Christian reinvention, was also the preeminent commission of the Catholic kings, Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabel of Castile, in papal Rome. Throughout this period, buildings were reinterpreted in relation to the mediating role of textual and pictorial representations that shaped the pilgrimage experience across expansive geographies. In this study, Kathryn Blair Moore challenges fundamental ideas within architectural history regarding the origins and significance of European recreations of buildings in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Nazareth. From these conceptual foundations, she traces and re-interprets the significance of the architecture of the Holy Land within changing religious and political contexts, from the First Crusade and the emergence of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land to the anti-Islamic crusade movements of the Renaissance, as well as the Reformation.

Author: Kathryn Blair Moore
ISBN-10: 1107139082
ISBN-13: 9781107139084
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Language: English
Published: 02/27/2017
Pages: 436
Format: Hardcover
Weight: 3.81lbs
Size: 11.50h x 8.66w x 1.17d

Review Citation(s):
Library Journal 06/15/2017
Choice 03/01/2018
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_f592d7de-b9d2-42c4-92da-122a7f078346.jpg?v=1681068156
the-monster-in-the-garden-luke-morgan-9780812247558
The Monster in the Garden: The Grotesque and the Gigantic in Renaissance Landscape Design

Monsters, grotesque creatures, and giants were frequently depicted in Italian Renaissance landscape design, yet they have rarely been studied. At a time when a pandemic is sweeping the world, this book reflects on the danger outside by concentrating on the role of enclosed structures as places where humans may feel safe, or as sites of beauty and harmony that provide solace. At the same time, a number of the architectures in Cervantes trigger dread and claustrophobia as they display a kind of shapelessness and a haunting aura that blends with the narrative.

This volume invites readers to discover hundreds of edifices that Cervantes built with the pen. Their variety is astounding. The narrators and characters in these novels tell of castles, fortifications, inns, mills, prisons, palaces, towers, and villas which appear in their routes or in their conversations, and which welcome them, amaze them, or entrap them. Cervantes may describe actual buildings such as the Pantheon in Rome, or he may imagine structures that metamorphose before our eyes, as we come to view one architecture within another, and within another, creating an abyss of space. They deeply affect the characters as they feel enclosed, liberated, or suspended or as they look upon such structures with dread, relief, or admiration.

Cervantes' Architectures sheds light on how places and spaces are perceived through words and how impossible structures find support, paradoxically, in the literary architecture of the work.

Author: Frederick a. de Armas
ISBN-10: 1487542399
ISBN-13: 9781487542399
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
Language: English
Published: 04/15/2022
Pages: 384
Format: Hardcover
Weight: 1.40lbs
Size: 9.13h x 6.06w x 1.10d

Review Citation(s):
Choice 09/01/2023
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_5cf232a6-a6b5-4f46-9331-5a21c3286885.jpg?v=1681508941
medici-gardens-raffaella-fabiani-giannetto-9780812240726
Medici Gardens: From Making to Design

Medici Gardens: From Making to Design challenges the common assumption that such gardens as Trebbio, Cafaggiolo, Careggi, and Fiesole were the products of an established design practice whereby one client commissioned one architect or artist. The book reverses the usual belief that a garden is the practical application of theoretical principles extracted from garden treatises, and suggests that, in the case of the gardens in Florence, garden making preceded its theoretical articulation.

Drawing from Medici tax returns, inventories, and correspondence, Raffaella Fabiani Giannetto examines the transformation of these gardens from functional and pleasurable kitchen gardens to symbols of political power and family prestige. The Medici gardens of the fifteenth century were the result both of everyday living and of a poetic activity that was influenced by cultural expectations and societal demands.

Crossing disciplinary boundaries, the author compares the making of actual gardens to that of the literary pleasances described by Petrarch, Boccaccio, and Ficino. Although the fictional gardens appear "designed" in that their place within literary works is carefully thought through, their actual counterparts are the product of a modus operandi, indebted to horticultural knowledge handed down from one generation to another in a slowly evolving tradition.

Author: Raffaella Fabiani Giannetto
ISBN-10: 0812240723
ISBN-13: 9780812240726
Publisher: University of Pennsylvania Press
Language: English
Published: 05/30/2008
Pages: 328
Format: Hardcover
Weight: 1.35lbs
Size: 9.20h x 6.20w x 1.10d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_4523594d-30a6-4d36-8869-3a3c71675c1e.jpg?v=1681517777
birth-of-venus-daily-planner-shy-panda-notebooks-9781970177336
Birth of Venus Daily Planner 2021: Sandro Botticelli Artsy Year Agenda: January - December 12 Months Artistic Italian Renaissance Painting Pretty Dail
Birth of Venus Planner 2021 (Sandro Botticelli) Schedule Each Appointment and Stay Organized in 2021!

Would you like to:

- See your schedule at a glance?
- Have a clear overview of your to-do list?

Then look no further...

This beautiful Daily Planner 2021 lets you keep track of everything you care about.Get This 2021 Monthly Planner and Start Organizing Your Life

This stylish agenda scheduler will make things easy. Like so many of his generation, he had to deal with the plague, was drawn into the madness of the English Civil War and was forced to take sides, and witnessed the regicide of King Charles I. Lilly lived in a time of enormous religious and social upheaval, but his astrology remained the outer expression of a magical world-view, based on hermetic and neo-Platonic principles and rooted in the 16th century. This book provides the reader with a thorough introduction to the world of William Lilly, the famous 17th century astrologer and magician. It brings together transcripts of his autobiography and of some of his most important works. It also includes Peter Stockinger and Sue Ward's Monster of Ingratitude, an investigative journey offering new insights into the notorious contention between Lilly and the astrologer John Gadbury. Amongst other valuable information, the book contains: - The Life of William Lilly, Student in Astrology Transcribed from the autograph, with annotations, commentaries and biographical notes, including Elias Ashmole's addenda. Nativities of some notable persons appended. - The Nativity of Sir William Wittypoole Transcript of a nativity, rectified and directed by William Lilly, a previously unpublished manuscript providing the reader with an exciting insight into the working methods of the master astrologer. - Monster of Ingratitude This research contains brief biographies of Lilly and Gadbury. It shows how their enmity began, developed and ended, including details of the rather one-sided pamphlet war. An in-depth study of published material, timelines and bibliographic entries of all primary sources used are also included and provide the grounds for a different explanation from that commonly proposed.

Author: Peter Stockinger, Sue Ward
ISBN-10: 1906958629
ISBN-13: 9781906958626
Publisher: Mandrake of Oxford
Language: English
Published: 09/02/2014
Pages: 252
Format: Paperback
Weight: 1.01lbs
Size: 9.69h x 7.44w x 0.53d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/files/img_d50b7d75-20d7-41cd-ba1a-aaeae77f81c2.jpg?v=1683242927
painting-in-stone-fabio-barry-9780300248173
Painting in Stone: Architecture and the Poetics of Marble from Antiquity to the Enlightenment
A sweeping history of premodern architecture told through the material of stone

Spanning almost five millennia, Painting in Stone tells a new history of premodern architecture through the material of precious stone. Experienced Palladio researcher Guido Beltramini has worked meticulously on material from historical documents about Palladio's person and life, and assembled a full picture of the architect. Palladio in Private follows his career, his rise from being the ordinary miller's son Pietro della Gondola to become the architect Andrea Palladio. Beltramini does not just explore Palladio's origins, his training as a stonemason, and his complex relationship with powerful clients and scholars, but also his private life: his jovial character, his life as a married man with five children, and not least his profound conviction that architecture can and must enrich life. The text is complemented by numerous illustrations. Guido Beltramini, born in 1961, has been director of the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio in Vicenza since 1991. In this volume, the writings of Alberti, Palladio, and Vasari are compared to determine how buildings were designed and constructed during the Italian Renaissance. Michelangelo's drawings, letters, models, and other primary sources have been reconsidered to reconstruct how he intended for St. Peter's Basilica to look. My conclusion is that he planned to add a six-columned portico and to have a dome of similar height to the present dome, but which was also to have had a lower U-shaped dome on the interior. The work of other architects is also reconsidered mainly on the basis of primary sources.Appended are discussions of the recovery of ancient knowledge during the Renaissance and the role of Aldus Manutius in printing Greek and Latin classics. Although the model for the dome was widely known, the question of how this was to be accomplished was the great challenge of the age. This dome would be the largest ever built. This is foremost a technical challenge but it is also a philosophical one. The project takes place at an important time for Florence. The city is transitioning from a High Medieval world view into the new dynamics and ideas and will lead to the full flowering of what we know as the Renaissance. Thus the competition at the heart of this game plays out against the background of new ideas about citizenship, aesthetics, history (and its application to the present), and new technology. The central challenge is to expose players to complex and multifaceted situations and to individuals that animated life in Florence in the early 1400s. Humanism as a guiding philosophy is taking root and scholars are looking for ways to link the mercantile city to the glories of Rome and to the wisdom of the ancients across many fields. The aesthetics of the classical world (buildings, plastic arts and intellectual pursuits) inspired wonder, perhaps even envy, but the new approaches to the past by scholars such as Petrarch suggested that perhaps the creative classes are not simply crafts people, but men of ideas.

Three teams compete for the honor to construct the dome, a project overseen by the Arte Della Lana (wool workers guild) and judged by them and a group of Florentine citizens who are merchants, aristocrats, learned men, and laborers. Their goal is to make the case for the building to live up to the ideals of Florence. The game gives students a chance to enter into the world of Florence in the early 1400s to develop an understanding of the challenges and complexity of such a major artistic and technical undertaking while providing an opportunity to grasp the interdisciplinary nature of major public works.

Author: Paula Kay Lazrus
ISBN-10: 1469653397
ISBN-13: 9781469653396
Publisher: University of North Carolina Press
Language: English
Published: 07/01/2019
Pages: 92
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.44lbs
Size: 10.00h x 8.00w x 0.19d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/files/img_fa867e22-e4e2-405a-b741-d572b6b954e1.jpg?v=1683285633
philip-ii-of-spain-and-laura-fern-ndez-gonz-lez-9780271087245
Philip II of Spain and the Architecture of Empire

Philip II of Spain was a major patron of the arts, best known for his magnificent palace and royal mausoleum at the Monastery of San Lorenzo of El Escorial. The book examines the dialectical relationship of these in the creation of the city. The subject is a contextual theory of urban design, utilizing Italian Renaissance and Baroque architecture and urban development of Rome, as a case study. It demonstrates the complexity of Roman urbanism and the inter-relationship and role of Roman architecture to its urban context. The theory of urban 'Contextualism' has not been adequately discussed and presented in regards to this historical city. Why it is important as a theory and as a method for designing Roman cities today? And therefore, it needs to be discussed. The book is an exploration and demonstration of urban analysis and visual diagramming, it is an urban and architectural analysis of significant Ancient, Renaissance and Baroque historical developments in the great city of Rome. The majority of timber-framed buildings are houses, but timber was used in all kinds of other buildings, including shops, inns, churches, town halls and farm buildings. This book outlines the history of timber-framed buildings, including their construction techniques, regional variations in style, and their social status. It was also powered by a quest to document artistic "reality" according to newly discovered scientific and mathematical principles. By the late 15th century, Italy had become the recognized European leader in the fields of painting, architecture, and sculpture. But why was Florence the center of this burgeoning creativity, and how did it spread to other Italian cities? Brimming with vivid reproductions of works by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, and others, this book showcases the creative achievements that traveled from Florence to Rome to Venice. Art historian Norbert Wolf explores the influence of secular and religious patronage on artistic development; how the urban structure and way of life allowed for such a rich exchange of ideas; and how ideas of humanism informed artists reaching toward the future while clinging to the ideals of the past. Insightful, accessible, and fascinating, this thoroughly researched book highlights the connections and mutual influences of Florence, Rome, and Venice as well as their intriguing rivalries and interdependencies.

Author: Norbert Wolf
ISBN-10: 3791386433
ISBN-13: 9783791386430
Publisher: Prestel Publishing
Language: English
Published: 10/05/2021
Pages: 272
Format: Hardcover
Weight: 7.35lbs
Size: 15.10h x 12.20w x 1.40d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/files/img_d1e9b008-1177-43ba-9157-b6af6370ee84.jpg?v=1684965793
clevelands-millionaires-row-alan-f-dutka-9781467104159
Cleveland's Millionaires' Row
The incredible affluence and extravagance of Euclid Avenue's Millionaires' Row have fascinated Clevelanders for more than a century. Anguished by the death of friends and discouraged by the loss of commissions to younger artists, this supreme painter and sculptor began carving his own tomb. When the Pope handed Michelangelo control of the St. Peter's project in 1546, it was a study in architectural mismanagement, plagued by flawed design and faulty engineering. Assessing the situation with his uncompromising eye and razor-sharp intellect, Michelangelo overcame the furious resistance of Church officials to persuade the Pope that it was time to start over.

In this richly illustrated book, leading Michelangelo expert William Wallace sheds new light on this least familiar part of Michelangelo's biography, revealing a creative genius who was also a skilled engineer and enterprising businessman. The challenge of building St. Peter's deepened Michelangelo's faith, Wallace shows. Fighting the intrigues of Church politics and his own declining health, Michelangelo became convinced that he was destined to build the largest and most magnificent church ever conceived. And he was determined to live long enough that no other architect could alter his design.

Author: William E. To the engineers of the era, water represented a force that could be harnessed for human industry but was equally possessed of formidable destructive power. For Leonardo da Vinci, water was an enduring fascination, appearing in myriad forms throughout his work. In Watermarks, Leslie Geddes explores the extraordinary range of Leonardo's interest in water and shows how artworks by him and his peers contributed to hydraulic engineering and the construction of large river and canal systems.

From drawings for mobile bridges and underwater breathing apparatuses to plans for water management schemes, Leonardo evinced a deep interest in the technical aspects of water. His visual studies of the ways in which landscape is shaped by water demonstrated both his artistic mastery and probing scientific mind. Analyzing Leonardo's notebooks, plans, maps, and paintings, Geddes argues that, for Leonardo and fellow artists, drawing was a form of visual thinking and problem solving essential to understanding and controlling water and other parts of the natural world. Award-winning, bestselling author Ross King weaves this drama amid a background of the plagues, wars, political feuds, and the intellectual ferments of Renaissance Florence to bring the dome's creation to life in a fifteenth-century chronicle with twenty-first-century resonance.

Author: Ross King
ISBN-10: 1620401932
ISBN-13: 9781620401934
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA
Language: English
Published: 08/13/2013
Pages: 208
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.44lbs
Size: 8.72h x 5.06w x 0.55d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/files/img_925dce6b-85a7-41b1-9455-bf23e616e257.jpg?v=1685006411
the-life-of-anne-boleyn-claire-ridgway-9788494853937
The Life of Anne Boleyn Colouring Book

Claire Ridgway, author of The Fall of Anne Boleyn: A Countdown and owner of The Anne Boleyn Files website, and artist Dmitry Yakhovsky have come together to create this beautiful colouring book which will be enjoyed by young and old alike.

The Life of Anne Boleyn Colouring Book tells Anne Boleyn's story through both text and drawings, from her family background, through her rise and fall at Henry VIII's court, to her execution in May 1536, and her legacy: Queen Elizabeth I. Notwithstanding this exceptional artistic production, Ottoman art and architecture have not received the same attention in historiography as, for instance, the celebrated Italian Renaissance. Drawing upon notions of rebirth characteristic of the Renaissance, more generally, The Ottoman Renaissance seeks to situate Renaissance Ottoman art within a more global context. This book recognises the cultural interaction and sharing of values across the Mediterranean basin that characterised the period more broadly, yet examines art and architecture through specifically Ottoman conceptions of rebirth. Ottoman ideas of rebirth, although built on the classical Greece and Rome, moved well beyond these legacies. Indeed, the Ottomans were much more focused on their Eastern (Turkic, Timurid, Persian) and Islamic heritage than that of the classical world which features in the West. Both the ancient and recent past provided inspiration on which to build a cultural identity specific to the Ottoman artistic experience. In order to fully understand the shared values of the early modern Mediterranean and critically engage with the period's different interpretations of rebirth, this study compares the works of three Renaissance contemporaries: the Italian Giorgio Vasari and the Ottomans Mustafa Ali and Mimar Sinan.This study argues that the unique geographic location of the sultans of the Ottoman court allowed artists of the Ottoman Empire to capitalise on the inherited legacies of both the Islamic-Timurid-Turkic-Persian East and the Latin West. The result was a synthesis of Eastern and Western exemplars which ultimately produced a rebirth in the arts distinct from their early modern Italian and European counterparts. This work traces this Renaissance from its beginnings in 1413 through to its triumphant phase in the S?eymanic Age (1520-75, including the reign of his son, Selim II). In its examination of the Empire's architecture, decorative tiles, calligraphy, and miniature paintings, the study contributes to current scholarship in the field that seeks to assess the Renaissance from a more complex, multi-focal, and multinational perspective. Furthermore, it reinforces the idea that many renaissances arose concurrently in the Mediterranean basin in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Author: Metin Mustafa
ISBN-10: 0646827391
ISBN-13: 9780646827391
Publisher: Centre for Ottoman Renaissance and Civilisati
Language: English
Published: 09/16/2020
Pages: 338
Format: Paperback
Weight: 1.38lbs
Size: 9.00h x 6.00w x 0.88d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/files/img_ea0cc33f-97e0-49f0-b384-5a186b63b0db.jpg?v=1685052824
frescoes-for-mr-rockefellers-city-archibald-macleish-9781447423300
Frescoes for Mr. Rockefeller's City
Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. One of the earliest books to describe the monuments of Venice for inquisitive travelers, Sansovino's guide was written at a time when St. Mark's Piazza was in the process of taking the form we see today. With in-depth descriptions of the buildings created by the author's father, noted sculptor and architect Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570), including the Mint, Library, and Loggetta, the volume presents a vivid portrait of Venice during a particularly rich moment in the city's history. An engaging introduction and scholarly annotations to the original text provide the modern reader with an appreciation of the history of this great city as well as a practical guide for seeking out and enjoying its Renaissance treasures.

Author: Vaughan Hart, Peter Hicks
ISBN-10: 030017506X
ISBN-13: 9780300175066
Publisher: Yale University Press
Language: English
Published: 05/30/2017
Pages: 392
Format: Hardcover
Weight: 1.70lbs
Size: 8.70h x 5.10w x 1.20d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/files/img_172b4466-6b27-4ecb-a2cb-72130d223cf7.jpg?v=1685462634
landscape-and-authority-in-the-stephen-h-whiteman-9781512823585
Landscape and Authority in the Early Modern World

Courts and societies across the early modern Eurasian world were fundamentally transformed by the physical, technological, and conceptual developments of their era. Evolving forms of communication, greatly expanded mobility, the spread of scientific knowledge, and the emergence of an increasingly integrated global economy all affected how states articulated and projected visions of authority into societies that, in turn, perceived and responded to these visions in often contrasting terms. Landscape both reflected and served as a vehicle for these transformations, as the relationship between the land and its imagination and consumption became a fruitful site for the negotiation of imperial identities within and beyond the precincts of the court.

In Landscape and Authority in the Early Modern World, contributors explore the role of landscape in the articulation and expression of imperial identity and the mediation of relationships between the court and its many audiences in the early modern world. Nine studies focused on the geographical areas of East and South Asia, the Islamic world, and Europe illuminate how early modern courts and societies shaped, and were shaped by, the landscape, including both physical sites, such as gardens, palaces, cities, and hunting parks, and conceptual ones, such as those of frontiers, idealized polities, and the cosmos.

The collected essays expand the meaning and potential of landscape as a communicative medium in this period by putting an array of forms and subjects in dialogue with one another, including not only unique expressions, such as gardens, paintings, and manuscripts, but also the products of rapidly developing commercial technologies of reproduction, especially print. The volume invites a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the complexity with which early modern states constructed and deployed different modes of landscape for different audiences and environments.

Contributors: Robert Batchelor, Seyed Mohammad Ali Emrani, John Finlay, Caroline Fowler, Katrina Grant, Finola O'Kane, Anton Schweizer, Larry Silver, Stephen H.
