South African Indian playwrighting is rich both in quantity as well as in quality. Playwrights like Ronnie Govender, Muthal Naidoo, Kessie Govender, Kriben Pillay, Rajesh Gopie, Ashwin Singh and Ismail Mahomed have experimented with the stage space as well as themes. Their plays reflect the predicament of the Indians living in South Africa for more than 150 years. Many of them, in fact, are awarded for writing plays and exposing various issues concerning the Indians. South Africa is a classic example of multiracial and multicultural existence. However, each race has its own problems and issues and therefore it is very important to understand each race in order to understand the multiplicity of the nation. Literature mirrors racial as well as national issues. Hence one can develop understanding of a specific race through literature produced by its own writers. South African Indian drama presents before readers the history of 150 years of existence of Indians in South Africa, the community's problems, its relations with other races and its commitment and concern for the growth of the nation. These plays are written in two broad historical epochs: one, plays written during apartheid and, second, plays written after apartheid was removed, in the free nation. Of course, many plays which were written during the apartheid remained limited merely to performance as the playwrights of that time had an immediate task at hand, that of protest against unjust racial discrimination. It seems it may not be possible to publish all these unpublished plays as the time they address to in their plays has already passed and so none perhaps would be interested in reading them. The present book critiques only those plays which are available in print. The book also narrates the history of Indian settlement and growth and development of Indian drama. The contemporary playwrighting by Indians in South Africa is very interesting. These plays reflect discontent of the playwrights over the contemporary socio-political scenario. The immediate and pressing issues seem to be sacrificed over unethical power-politics by the people in power. Issues of locating the self in the mixing of races and problems arising out of it are discussed in these plays. The present book analyses all the plays in the chronology of their publication.

Author: Pranav Joshipura
ISBN-10: 1082211346
ISBN-13: 9781082211348
Publisher: Independently Published
Language: English
Published: 08/03/2019
Pages: 454
Format: Paperback
Weight: 1.58lbs
Size: 9.61h x 6.69w x 0.92d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_4e4fa473-ad83-40c3-a064-e91ea1e701b5.jpg?v=1680620960
interpersonal-communication-julia-t-wood-9780357032947
Interpersonal Communication: Everyday Encounters
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: EVERYDAY ENCOUNTERS, 9th Edition, relates theory and skills directly to students' everyday interactions as it delivers a solid introduction to interpersonal communication. Bingo puts Shakespeare himself on stage in a critical account of the writer and Stratford landowner's final days. The Fool is based on the life and madness of the 19th-century working-class poet John Clare and The Woman is set at the end of the Trojan War with Hecuba as a main character, but instead of offering a resolution its Tempest-like second half defines the nature of social conflict. All three plays deal with the origins of the tensions of the modern world. Also included is Stone, a one-act parable of oppression.

Edward Bond is "a great playwright - many, particularly in continental Europe, would say the greatest living English playwright" (Independent)

Author: Edward Bond
ISBN-10: 0413338908
ISBN-13: 9780413338907
Publisher: Methuen Drama
Language: English
Published: 11/12/1987
Pages: 256
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.95lbs
Size: 7.90h x 5.00w x 1.20d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_4a4ecb16-c062-4d66-893e-bdaae9008c6d.jpg?v=1680810779
anouilh-plays-jean-anouilh-9780413722607
Anouilh Plays: Two: The Rehearsal, Becket, Eurydice, and the Orchestra

A selection of the most enduring work of one of this century's best-known French playwrights

This selection of plays by Jean Anouilh (1910-87), includes The Rehearsal ('quintissential Anouilh', Herald Tribune); Becket ('witty, intelligent, full of repartee and irreverence' Financial Times); The Orchestra (a play within a concert), together with Eurydice, an ironic modern reworkng of the myth ('a fascinating piece', Financial Times)."Anouilh is a poet but not a poet of words, he is a poet of words-acted, of scenes-set, of players-performing." (Peter Brook)

Author: Jean Anouilh
ISBN-10: 0413722600
ISBN-13: 9780413722607
Publisher: A&c Black 3pl
Language: English
Published: 12/04/1997
Pages: 288
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.70lbs
Size: 8.00h x 5.00w x 0.80d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_a8403cf5-9074-4f6a-9c22-e13aa56b5b65.jpg?v=1680810781
lavery-plays-bryony-lavery-9780413723406
Lavery Plays:1: Origin of the Species; Two Marias; Her Aching Heart; Nothing Compares to You

For the first time, Bryony Lavery's plays back in print in one volume

Includes the plays Her Aching Heart, Nothing Compares to You, The Two Marias and Origin of the Species. Its three-part structure moves from the first steps in starting to think about performance, through to the diverse and interrelated concerns required of higher-level study:

Part 1 - Central Concepts for Theatre and Performance Research　-　introduces the language and key ideas that are used to discuss and think about theatre: concepts of performance; the emergence of meaning; and the theatrical event as an experience shared by actors and spectators. Part 1 contextualizes these concepts by tracing the history of Theatre and Performance Studies as a discipline.

Part 2　-　Fields, Theories and Methods　-　looks at how to　analyse　a performance and how to conduct theatre-historiographical research. This section is concerned with the 'doing' of Theatre and Performance Studies: establishing and understanding different methodological approaches; using sources effectively; and building theoretical frameworks.

Part 3 - Pushing Boundaries　-　expands on the lessons of Parts 1 and 2 in order to engage with theatre and performance in a global context. Six of his professional legal speeches are included in this new edition, both for their intrinsic interest and for the accessibility of their language. In his introduction, Dr. Carey discusses Lysias' life and place in the evolution of Greek prose style and in the development of Greek rhetoric. He approaches the speeches as attempts to secure a verdict favorable to the speaker and assesses how effectively the selection and deployment of arguments promote this end. He addresses textual issues and problems of Lysias' style and syntax, while focusing particularly on literary concerns: Lysias' use of rhetorical devices, his marshalling of fact and argument and his manipulation of contemporary values and prejudices.

Author: Lysias
ISBN-10: 0521269881
ISBN-13: 9780521269889
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Language: English
Published: 01/25/1990
Pages: 248
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.61lbs
Size: 8.08h x 4.94w x 0.66d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_be0d3ef7-1a30-4870-b573-924af2a5181d.jpg?v=1680813050
the-cambridge-introduction-to-theatre-christopher-innes-9780521606226
The Cambridge Introduction to Theatre Directing
This Introduction is an exciting journey through the different styles of theatre that twentieth-century and contemporary directors have created. It discusses artistic and political values, rehearsal methods and the diverging relationships with actors, designers, other collaborators and audiences, and treatment of dramatic material. Offering a compelling analysis of theatrical practice, Christopher Innes and Maria Shevtsova explore the different rehearsal and staging principles and methods of such earlier groundbreaking figures as Stanislavsky, Meyerhold and Brecht, revising standard perspectives on their work. The authors analyse, as well, a diverse range of innovative contemporary directors, including Ariane Mnouchkine, Elizabeth LeCompte, Peter Sellars, Robert Wilson, Thomas Ostermeier and Oskaras Korsunovas, among many others. While tracing the different roots of directorial practices across time and space, and discussing their artistic, cultural and political significance, the authors provide key examples of the major directorial approaches and reveal comprehensive patterns in the craft of directing and the influence and collaborative relationships of directors.

Author: Christopher Innes, Maria Shevtsova
ISBN-10: 0521606225
ISBN-13: 9780521606226
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Language: English
Published: 05/02/2013
Pages: 298
Format: Paperback
Weight: 1.10lbs
Size: 8.90h x 5.90w x 0.50d

Review Citation(s):
Choice 02/01/2014
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_c368adf3-908b-45fa-8878-a2cb1718ce5b.jpg?v=1680813261
the-cambridge-introduction-tragedy-jennifer-wallace-9780521855396
The Cambridge Introduction to Tragedy
Tragedy is the art-form created to confront the most difficult experiences we face: death, loss, injustice, thwarted passion, despair. From ancient Greek theatre up to the most recent plays, playwrights have found, in tragic drama, a means to seek explanation for disaster. But tragedy is also a word we continually encounter in the media, to denote an event which is simply devastating in its emotional power. This introduction explores the relationship between tragic experience and tragic representation. After giving an overview of the tragic theatre canon - including chapters on the Greeks, Shakespeare, Ibsen, Chekhov, post-colonial drama, and Beckett - it also looks at the contribution which philosophers have brought to this subject, before ranging across other art-forms and areas of debate. The book is unique in its chronological range, and brings a wide spectrum of examples, from both literature and life, into the discussion of this emotional and frequently controversial subject.

Author: Jennifer Wallace
ISBN-10: 052185539X
ISBN-13: 9780521855396
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Language: English
Published: 05/10/2007
Pages: 252
Format: Hardcover
Weight: 1.15lbs
Size: 9.00h x 6.10w x 0.80d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_f38e68f4-6f30-43f5-a469-7546637917ae.jpg?v=1680813476
four-great-plays-by-henrik-henrik-ibsen-9780553212808
Four Great Plays by Henrik Ibsen
Here, in a single volume, are four major plays by the first modern playwright, Henrick Ibsen.

Ghosts--The startling portrayal of a family destroyed by disease and infidelity.
The Wild Duck--A poignant drama of lost illusions.
An Enemy Of The People--Ibsen's vigorous attack on public opinion.
And A Doll's House--The play that scandalized the Victorian world with its unsparing views of love and marriage, featuring one of the most controversial heroines--and one of the most famous exists--in the literature of the stage.

Author: Henrik Ibsen
ISBN-10: 055321280X
ISBN-13: 9780553212808
Publisher: Bantam Classics
Language: English
Published: 04/01/1984
Pages: 384
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.41lbs
Size: 7.00h x 4.30w x 0.77d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_7bb466a9-fc51-42b4-b78e-65a363026864.jpg?v=1680814015
shakespeare-alive-joseph-papp-9780553270815
Shakespeare Alive!
From Joseph Papp, American's foremost theater producer, and writer Elizabeth Kirkland: a captivating tour through the world of William Shakespeare.

Discover the London of Shakespeare's time, a fascinating place to be--full of mayhem and magic, exploration and exploitation, courtiers and foreigners.
