Indeed, one of the twentieth century's most revered icons was a lively, prolific correspondent who developed in rich, nuanced dispatches the ideas that would influence generations of writers and intellectuals. This historic work--never before published in America and featuring many previously unseen letters--presents an account of Orwell's interior life as personal and absorbing as readers may ever see.
Over the course of a lifetime, Orwell corresponded with hundreds of people, including many distinguished political and artistic figures. Witty, personal, and profound, the letters tell the story of Orwell's passionate first love that ended in devastation and explains how young Eric Arthur Blair chose the pseudonym "George Orwell." In missives to luminaries such as T. S. Eliot, Stephen Spender, Arthur Koestler, Cyril Connolly, and Henry Miller, he spells out his literary and philosophical beliefs. Readers will encounter Orwell's thoughts on matters both quotidian (poltergeists and the art of playing croquet) and historical--including his illuminating descriptions of war-shattered Barcelona and pronouncements on bayonets and the immanent cruelty of chaining German prisoners.

The letters also reveal the origins of his famous novels. To a fan he wrote, "I think, and have thought ever since the war began...that our cause is the better, but we have to keep on making it the better, which involves constant criticism." A paragraph before, he explained that the British intelligentsia in 1944 were "perfectly ready for dictatorial methods, secret police, systematic falsification of history," prefiguring the themes of 1984. Entrusting the manuscript of Animal Farm to Leonard Moore, his literary agent, Orwell describes it as "a sort of fairy story, really a fable with political meaning...This book is murder from the Communist point of view."

Hardly known outside a small circle of Orwell scholars, these rare letters include Orwell's message to Dwight Macdonald of 5 December 1946 explaining Animal Farm; his correspondence with his first translator, R. N. Raimbault (with English translations of the French originals); and the moving encomium written about Orwell by his BBC head of department after his service there. The volume concludes with a fearless account of the painful illness that took Orwell's life at age forty-seven. His last letter concerns his son and his estate and closes with the words, "Beyond that I can't make plans at present."

Meticulously edited and fully annotated by Peter Davison, the world's preeminent Orwell scholar, the volume presents Orwell "in all his varieties" and his relationships with those most close to him, especially his first wife, Eileen. Combined with rare photographs and hand-drawn illustrations, George Orwell: A Life in Letters offers "everything a reader new to Orwell needs to know...and a great deal that diehard fans will be enchanted to have" (New Statesmen).

Author: George Orwell
ISBN-10: 0871404621
ISBN-13: 9780871404626
Publisher: Liveright Publishing Corporation
Language: English
Published: 08/12/2013
Pages: 560
Format: Hardcover
Weight: 2.10lbs
Size: 9.50h x 6.20w x 1.30d

Review Citation(s):
Publishers Weekly 04/08/2013
Library Journal 06/01/2013 pg. 108
Kirkus Reviews 06/01/2013
Choice 02/01/2014
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_250a9a58-251e-4d1e-bfe5-157c62d4a670.jpg?v=1681084533
a-clergymans-daughter-george-orwell-9781604443608
A Clergyman's Daughter
A Clergyman's Daughter is a 1935 novel by English author George Orwell. It is set in 1930s London. The main theme is Gordon Comstock's romantic ambition to defy worship of the money-god and status, and the dismal life that results. He etches the ugly insanity of what Gordon calls "the money-world" in unflinching detail, but the satire has a second edge, too, and Gordon himself is scarcely heroic. In the course of his misadventures, we become grindingly aware that his radical solution to the problem of the money-world is no solution at all--that in his desperate reaction against a monstrous system, he has become something of a monster himself.

Author: George Orwell
ISBN-10: 9390575400
ISBN-13: 9789390575404
Publisher: Sanage Publishing
Language: English
Published: 02/20/2021
Pages: 276
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.90lbs
Size: 9.00h x 6.00w x 0.62d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_c35603fa-167d-4af8-a279-c036d19e2cbf.jpg?v=1681504174
animal-farm-hindi-george-orwell-9789390575886

Author: George Orwell
ISBN-10: 9390575885
ISBN-13: 9789390575886
Publisher: Sanage Publishing House
Language: English
Published: 03/15/2021
Pages: 130
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.38lbs
Size: 8.50h x 5.50w x 0.31d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_c73fa9d6-bba0-4f8e-a6c0-630b8da851b9.jpg?v=1681505647
homage-to-catalonia-george-orwell-9789354620003
Homage to Catalonia
Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell's personal account of his experiences and observations fighting for the POUM militia of the Republican army during the Spanish Civil War. It tells the story of Dorothy Hare, the clergyman's daughter of the title, whose life is turned upside down when she suffers an attack of amnesia. Orwell draws a picture of systematic forces that preserve the bound servitude in each setting. He uses Dorothy's fictitious endeavours to criticise certain institutions... the English private-school system; the way in which wages are systematically lowered as the hop season progressed and why they were so low to begin with; and the life and attitude of the manual seasonal labourer.

Author: George Orwell
ISBN-10: 9354620167
ISBN-13: 9789354620164
Publisher: True Sign Publishing House
Language: English
Published: 03/05/2021
Pages: 210
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.55lbs
Size: 8.50h x 5.50w x 0.44d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_94d05581-6fa0-43af-8591-3d8ec729d294.jpg?v=1681507749
1984-unabridged-george-orwell-9789385899430
1984 (unabridged)
Author: George Orwell
ISBN-10: 9385899430
ISBN-13: 9789385899430
Publisher: Insight Publica
Language: English
Published: 06/01/2020
Pages: 238
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.67lbs
Size: 8.50h x 5.50w x 0.54d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/products/img_7c31e4aa-0268-4bd5-a986-0c692f4ecae2.jpg?v=1681511246
dickens-dali-and-others-george-orwell-9780156260534
Dickens, Dali and Others
Ten celebrated essays by a man universally regarded as a master of the essay form. The animals of Mr. Jones' Manor Farm are overworked, mistreated, and desperately seeking a reprieve. In their quest to create an idyllic society where justice and equality reign, the animals of Manor Farm revolt against their human rulers, establishing the democratic Animal Farm under the credo, "All Animals Are Created Equal." Out of their cleverness, the pigs--Napoleon, Squealer, and Snowball--emerge as leaders of the new community. In a development of insidious familiarity, the pigs begin to assume ever greater amounts of power, while other animals, especially the faithful horse Boxer, assume more of the work. The climax of the story is the brutal betrayal of Boxer, when totalitarian rule is reestablished with the bloodstained postscript to the founding slogan: "But Some Animals Are More Equal than Others." This astonishing allegory, one of the most scathing satires in literary history, remains as fresh and relevant as the day it was published.

Author: George Orwell
ISBN-10: 1433210398
ISBN-13: 9781433210396
Publisher: Blackstone Audiobooks
Language: English
Published: 02/01/2008
Pages: 3
Format: CD
Weight: 0.25lbs
Size: 5.82h x 5.34w x 0.69d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/files/img_009c0b35-2924-44e0-9e9d-f134b75883b0.jpg?v=1683249451
down-and-out-in-paris-george-orwell-9789390852901
Down and Out in Paris and London
Orwell is well-known for his novels: 1984 and a satire, Animal Farm. Down and Out in Paris and London is his memoir where he pens down his life as a penniless writer in two cities: Paris and England. Through his beautiful phrases, meticulous, honest, and vivid experiences of searching for work and spending nights on benches, he blends the testimonies of others of his kind on the streets of London and Paris. The book both illuminates the huge change between 1933 and now, and exposes horrifying similarities. Job insecurity is still a major driver of homelessness nearly 90 years later. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him. The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At one end of it a coloured poster, too large for indoor display, had been tacked to the wall. It depicted imply an enormous face, more than a metre wide: the face of a man of about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features. Winston made for the stairs. It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours. It was part of the economy drive in preparation for Hate Week. The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way. On each landing, opposite the lift-shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. Written as individual books throughout his career, the eleven surviving diaries collected here record Orwell's youthful travels among miners and itinerant laborers, the fearsome rise of totalitarianism, the horrific drama of World War II, and the feverish composition of his great masterpieces Animal Farm and 1984 (which have now sold more copies than any two books by any other twentieth-century author). Exhibiting great brilliance of prose and composition, these treasured dispatches, edited by the world's leading Orwell scholar, exhibit "the seeds of famous passages to come" (New Statesman) and amount to a volume as penetrating as the autobiography he would never write.

Author: George Orwell
ISBN-10: 0871404109
ISBN-13: 9780871404107
Publisher: Liveright Publishing Corporation
Language: English
Published: 08/20/2012
Pages: 624
Format: Hardcover
Weight: 2.20lbs
Size: 9.40h x 6.50w x 1.70d

Review Citation(s):
Library Journal 03/01/2012 pg. 72
Library Journal 05/01/2012 pg. 81
Kirkus Reviews 05/15/2012
Publishers Weekly 05/21/2012 pg. 44
Booklist 07/01/2012 pg. 10
New York Times Book Review 09/02/2012 pg. 1
New York Times Book Review 09/09/2012 pg. 22
Choice 02/01/2013
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/files/img_71060c27-c4c9-4453-a270-cb496e1740d0.jpg?v=1683300614
burmese-days-george-orwell-9781847498809
Burmese Days

In the Burmese provincial town of Kyauktada, the world-weary John Flory - a thirty-something English teak dealer - leads a life of quiet disillusionment, hardly mixing with the natives or the expat community, and deriving some comfort only from his conversations with an Indian friend, Doctor Veraswami, and the attentions of his local mistress. He could see across the room but not much further. He had been drawing compensation of twenty-nine shillings a week for the past nine months, but the colliery company were now talking of putting him on 'partial compensation' of fourteen shillings a week. It all depended on whether the doctor passed him as fit for light work 'on top'. Even if the doctor did pass him there would, needless to say, be no light work available, but he could draw the dole and the company would have saved itself fifteen shillings a week. Watching this man go to the colliery to draw his compensation, I was struck by the profound differences that are still made by status. Here was a man who had been half blinded in one of the most useful of all jobs and was drawing a pension to which he had a perfect right, if anybody has a right to anything. Yet he could not, so to speak, demand this pension - he could not, for instance, draw it when and how he wanted it. He had to go to the colliery once a week at a time named by the company, and when he got there he was kept waiting about for hours in the cold wind. For all I know he was also expected to touch his cap and show gratitude to whoever paid him; at any rate he had to waste an afternoon and spend sixpence in bus fares. It is very different for a member of the bourgeoisie, even such a down-at-heel member as I am. Even when I am on the verge of starvation I have certain rights attaching to my bourgeois status. I do not earn much more than a miner earns, but I do at least get it paid into my bank in a gentle-manly manner and can draw it out when I choose. And even when my account is exhausted the bank people are passably polite. This business of petty inconvenience and indignity, of being kept waiting about, of having to do everything at other people's convenience, is inherent in working-class life. A thousand influences constantly press a working man down into a passive role. He does not act, he is acted upon. He feels himself the slave of mysterious authority and has a firm conviction that 'they' will never allow him to do this, that, and the other. Once when I was hop-picking I asked the sweated pickers (they earn something under sixpence an hour) why they did not form a union. I was told immediately that 'they' would never allow it. Who were 'they'? I asked. Nobody seemed to know, but evidently 'they' were omnipotent.

Author: George Orwell
ISBN-10: 1508407444
ISBN-13: 9781508407447
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
Language: English
Published: 02/09/2015
Pages: 160
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.49lbs
Size: 9.02h x 5.98w x 0.34d

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/files/img_7b4156fd-6c6b-4c98-acfa-b8da6de64369.jpg?v=1683314355
animal-farm-george-orwell-9788187138754
Animal Farm
All the animals were looking forward to the new, happy lives they would lead when Mr Jones's rule over them came to an end.

ISBN-10: 9390354838
ISBN-13: 9789390354832
Publisher: Tingle Books
Language: English
Published: 09/02/2020
Pages: 244
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.69lbs
Size: 8.50h x 5.50w x 0.55d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/files/img_440f2b59-55f8-4c8f-82d4-964429bd030e.jpg?v=1683325684
the-road-to-wigan-pier-george-orwell-9789390354573
The Road to Wigan Pier
It is only when you meet someone of a different culture from yourself that you begin to realize what your own beliefs really are.

The Road to Wigan Pier is George Orwell's 1937 study of poverty and working-class life in northern England.
