This is the reality for at least 124 million (1 in every 67) people today, as families embark on perilous journeys in search of basic Human Rights provisions such as the right to life, access to portable water, food, and safety. While some displaced people find refuge within their native countries, becoming Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), others flee across borders, earning the title of refugees. Understanding the distinction between IDPs and refugees is crucial, as it delineates responsibility and shapes the support and protection these individuals receive. This book goes beyond theory to offer readers a rare glimpse into the daily challenges faced by internally displaced persons in selected Sub-Saharan African countries. While the first chapter shapes the discourse on the meaning and scale of internal displacement, the second chapter examines the historical and religious context to illustrate the protracted nature of the internal displacement crisis. The third chapter explores international frameworks that have been developed to address the crisis of internal displacement while the three subsequent chapters, (four, five and six) provide the reader with empirical information captured from participating IDPs about their experiences as they fled from the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon, the high levels of organised criminality in Nigeria, or the flooding and xenophobic tensions in the Provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape in South Africa. The goal in sifting through this first-hand data is to give the reader a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of internal displacement in the affected countries, to stimulate reflection on the situation of IDPs, and to engender policy and implementation shifts that could mitigate the plight of affected people and communities. Chapter seven presents a comparative analysis of empirical data from the three countries, highlighting key differences and similarities based on the experiences of IDPs. The final chapter summarises avenues for support and protection for people caught up in the unfortunate situation of internal displacement.

Author: Paul Nkemngu Acha-Anyi
ISBN-13: 9798995770008
Publisher: Acha-Anyi Academic Press
Language: English
Published: 05/22/2026
Pages: 188
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.57lbs
Size: 9.00h x 6.00w x 0.40d
