His family moved to Bolton early in his life because of his father's job. His mother worked as a primary school teacher for most of her life. He joined the army aged sixteen and was discharged some years later because of his mental and physical health. He served with the Royal Engineers in the Falkland Islands in 1985 and is an army veteran. He then turned his mind to education and took A levels, some computer and administrative qualifications and passed an HND in computer studies. He committed a crime, stabbing his father in 1997 and has dealt with the mental health services since then with a great deal of difficulty.
