It begins with the human\u003cbr\u003eproblem that version control exists to solve and builds, chapter by chapter, from\u003cbr\u003ethe elementary operations of a single repository to the collaborative workflows\u003cbr\u003eof large teams, the automation of hooks and pipelines, the disciplines of security, \u003cbr\u003ecompliance, and privacy, the governance of open-source commons, the\u003cbr\u003eadvanced instruments of the expert, the integration of Git with the wider world\u003cbr\u003eof DevOps, containers, and cloud platforms, and finally a set of capstone projects\u003cbr\u003ethat put the whole of it to work. A running thread - the idea of version control as\u003cbr\u003ean act of bearing witness - binds these domains together, and the age of\u003cbr\u003eartificial intelligence, in which machines increasingly write and change the\u003cbr\u003erecord themselves, gives that thread its present urgency.\u003cbr\u003eA word on how to read it. The chapters are arranged so that each builds on\u003cbr\u003ethose before it, and the newcomer is advised to proceed in order; but the later\u003cbr\u003echapters are self-contained enough that the experienced reader may consult\u003cbr\u003ethem singly, as a reference. Each chapter opens with a brief presentation of its\u003cbr\u003econtents, proceeds through ten numbered sections, and closes with worked\u003cbr\u003eexamples, exercises, full resolutions, and references for further study. The\u003cbr\u003edetailed table of contents that follows lists every chapter and every section by its\u003cbr\u003eexact number, so that any topic may be found quickly.\u003cbr\u003eThis book is Volume I of II. A word on the shape of this edition. The treatise is\u003cbr\u003eissued in two volumes. The present volume, the first, contains Chapters 1\u003cbr\u003ethrough 45, carrying the reader from the human problem that version control\u003cbr\u003eexists to solve, through the elementary operations of a single repository, the\u003cbr\u003ebranching and merging of divergent work, the collaborative workflows of teams, \u003cbr\u003eand the core practices of everyday professional use. The second volume\u003cbr\u003econtinues from Chapter 46 onward through the advanced and specialised\u003cbr\u003ematerial and closes the work with its conclusion and full apparatus. The division\u003cbr\u003einto two volumes is not merely a matter of length: a small number of later\u003cbr\u003echapters - namely 60, 74, 75, 76, and 77 - are not yet present in the edition, \u003cbr\u003eand fall within the compass of the second volume; issuing the completed first\u003cbr\u003evolume separately allows the finished material to reach the reader without\u003cbr\u003ewaiting upon the rest. This first volume is complete and continuous in itself, with\u003cbr\u003eno gaps in its own sequence.\u003cbr\u003eFinally, and most sincerely: this is a large work, and no work of this size is free\u003cbr\u003eof error.
