Apparently some of the men of Company E were from Virginia, and it is likely that others of this battalion were also from the western portion of Virginia which became West Virginia. Col. Clay and some of the men of this battalion had served earlier in the KY 1st Infantry Battalion Mounted Rifles which was disbanded after its term of service ended. The unit served in the Department of East Tennessee, and later in the Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee.
