With this foundation in place, volume three moves from an emphasis on character acquisition to vocabulary development. It does this by focusing on mastering the most common \u003cem\u003ekun-yomi \u003c\/em\u003e(Japanese readings) associated with the everyday use characters. In addition to the 1,260 primary readings covered, hundreds of secondary readings and meanings are introduced with a corresponding mnemonic aid (i.e., acronym) to facilitate their recall, all of which are included in appendices at the end. Compounds are also a prominent feature of this volume. As in volumes one and two, there is a review lesson after each five-week period that includes fifteen new compounds.
