The discovery of penicillin; advances in surgery\u003cbr\u003ethat stopped wounds from getting gangrene, as well as operating theatres becoming\u003cbr\u003egerm-free environments; the use of sterilization to kill bacteria on surgical\u003cbr\u003einstruments; the discovery of different blood groups and blood compatibility or\u003cbr\u003eincompatibility, which showed that blood transfusions would only work if the blood\u003cbr\u003egroups were compatible, as well as the development of X-rays.\u003cbr\u003e Probably the most significant advances in healthcare were to come in 1911 and\u003cbr\u003e1948, with, first, the introduction of the National Health Insurance Act, 1911, and\u003cbr\u003ethen The National Health Service Act introduced in 1948.
