For years, the couple had been involved in humanitarian missions on behalf of the important British NGO Universal Healthcare (*). They had worked in Ethiopia, where they met, Congo, the Central African Republic, Myanmar, Niger and South Sudan. Their latest destination, from June 2023 to June 2024, was Sudan, where they first worked in Darfur and, in the last six months, in Kalarè (*), the area of the country where the fighting between government forces and the Rapid Support Forces is most intense.
For Muzawa, in Thaire, they have developed an innovative project. They will work at the local Universal Healthcare hospital, but will settle in the town, in a house where they will open a free public clinic. The idea behind this is to experiment with building a "poor" welfare system based on the model that exists in Western countries. The challenge is complex. Henry and Agnese will have to equip themselves to deal with the endemic diseases that thrive in the region (malaria, cholera, yellow fever, AIDS, etc.) and to manage relations with the political and religious authorities who defend local traditions and customs.
The province of Muzawa is also affected by continuous terrorist attacks carried out by groups of fanatics led by evil gurus who are working to destabilise the state of Thaire. The situation is therefore extremely critical, but Henry and Agnese stubbornly manage to create the embryo of the healthcare and prevention system they dream of in just a few months.
Alongside the narrative of the stages of the medical project's implementation, Agnese's very private personal story unfolds, in which, partly due to a dramatic event, family tensions and critical issues that she had never definitively resolved come to the fore.
The novel continually juxtaposes and intertwines the two stories, that of the humanitarian mission and that of the unveiling of Agnese's relationship difficulties and position within her family.

(*) 'Muzawa', 'Thaire' and 'Kalarè' are fictional place names. The name of the NGO 'Universal Healthcare' is also fictional.

Alessio Pasa, Italian, has published numerous novels, both in prose and verse.
