These compounds are intended to reduce leaching of applied nitrogen fertilizer by inhibiting the bacterial transformation of ammonium nitrogen to nitrate nitrogen, which is much more prone to leaching. Theoretically, this should increase crop yields and reduce detrimental environmental effects of nitrogen fertilizers.
