My father, an old soldier, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewas an alcoholic who smoked in the region of a thousand cigarettes a\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eweek, so, the cupboards were bare and family life broke down. My\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emother had little or no money for food, or even necessary items. I\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebecame something of a problem child and was convicted of theft for\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estealing food. They put me in the care of an extremely tough children's\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ehome until the age of sixteen. Because of the problems in my early\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003elife, I never did smoke or drink and at the age of twenty-six, married\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emy wife and we subsequently went into fostering and did it for many\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eyears along with our six children. We finally retired over forty-five\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eyears later.
