Or at least to shine a light into it, so that we can no longer pretend it does not exist.\u003cbr\u003eI am writing it as a man. I know this is problematic. I know there are things about womanhood that I cannot, by definition, understand from the inside. I know that women's stories should be told by women, and that my voice takes up space that could be occupied by a woman's voice. \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eI have wrestled with this. I have wondered whether I should step aside, whether this book should be written by someone else. And I have come to a conclusion that feels right, though I hold it humbly. \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eMen need to do this work too. Men need to learn this history, confront this theology, wrestle with these questions. If gender equality is only pursued by women, it will never be achieved because men hold too much of the power, too many of the keys. The liberation of women requires the transformation of men. \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eSo I am writing this book as a man who is trying to be transformed. I am writing it as an act of solidarity, an act of witness, an act of love. I am writing it because the women in my life deserve to have their worth proclaimed by the men who know them. I speak to them, and about them, and with them but never for them. The women in this book speak for themselves, through their actions, their words, their choices.
