They flourished, broadly, in the same span of centuries in the fourth and third millennia before Christ. They were separated by thousands of kilometres and by every apparent difference of language, appearance, and custom. And so far as we know, no person in any one of them ever set eyes on a person from either of the others.\u003cbr\u003eWhy braid them together, then, into a single history? Because we can now see, as no earlier generation could, that they were bound by a common thread - a relationship to the mobile herding peoples of the Pontic-Caspian steppe, whose great expansion in the third millennium reshaped the ancestry, and in large part the languages, of a continent and more. That expansion reached each of our three worlds in its own time and in its own way. It absorbed and ended the Trypillian world; it transformed the Beaker world, and in Britain replaced some ninety per cent of the population; and it reached the Indus world last of all, after the great Indus cities had already declined of other causes, so that Kalibangan stands as a kind of photograph of a civilization taken before the horsemen's descendants ever arrived - the world before. One steppe; three fates. That is the spine of this book.\u003cbr\u003eTo tell such a story now is to draw on a revolution in what we can know about the deep past. In little more than a decade, the reading of ancient DNA from long-dead bone has transformed our understanding of who moved, who mixed, and who replaced whom across prehistory, confirming some old ideas and overturning others. Alongside it, the reconstruction of vanished languages by the comparative method, the patient archaeology of the three cultures themselves, and the reading of ancient climate from lake-beds and cave formations, together allow us to weave a tapestry that spans a continent and a millennium - and to test the old, seductive assumption that a pot, a people, a language, and a technology must all move together as one. They do not, as this book will show again and again; each travels its own path, and only by tracing each separately can we reconstruct what actually happened.\u003cbr\u003eI have tried throughout to write accessibly without writing loosely - to make the science of haplogroups and admixture, of sound-laws and isotopes, clear to the general reader, while never pretending to a certainty the evidence does not support.
