They were encounters.
Stott, with his brilliant mind and pastoral heart, showed me Jesus in all His biblical and historical greatness.
Sanders, with his spiritual depth and missionary passion, led me to the foot of the cross until I felt its weight and glory.
But something curious happened as I read them: I missed something. Not what they wrote-what they wrote was magnificent. I missed the Jesus they pointed to, yet who was sometimes slightly hidden behind so much erudition (in Stott) or spiritual intensity (in Sanders).
I, a simple early-ministry servant dealing with real people-drivers, retirees, overworked housewives, confused young adults-needed something that preserved the depth of these masters but carried the simplicity of a kitchen-table conversation.
One day, after trying to explain kenosis (the self-emptying of Christ in Philippians 2) to a group of elderly ladies, one of them-Dona Maria, seventy-two-said: "Pastor, you're speaking Greek. I just want to know: Does Jesus understand me when I cry at night?"
That honest question became my moment of obedience.
A double obedience:
First, to the truth Stott and Sanders defended: Jesus is truly incomparable-in His person, His work, and His meaning.
Second, to the real people God placed in my path: people who need this incomparable yet uncomplicated Jesus.
The Seeds Planted by Stott and Sanders
John Stott taught me that Jesus must be studied with intellectual integrity.
In The Incomparable Christ, he walks through Scripture, history, and theology, showing how Christ is unique in every dimension. But at the end of my first reading, I thought: "My faithful brothers and sisters-fruit sellers, fishermen, farmers-will never be able to follow this theological flight."
Oswald Sanders taught me that Jesus must be experienced with spiritual intensity.
In The Incomparable Christ, he made me cry, pray, and break. But as I closed the book, I thought: "My housewives, between pots and pans and children, will feel that this spirituality is too far from their reality."
Then I understood my calling: not to surpass Stott or Sanders (impossible!), but to descend the mountain where they stood and bring the treasure down to the valley where I and God's people lived.
Like the disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration: Peter wanted to build tents and stay there-just as we theologians want to remain on the heights of scholarship. But Jesus led them back to the valley, to the demon-possessed boy, to the needy crowd (Matthew 17:14-21).
My Journey of Obedience
This obedience took shape slowly:
At fifty, I tried to write a "simplified Stott." I failed. I merely reduced; I did not transform. At fifty-five, I tried an "applied Sanders." I failed again. I added modern illustrations, but the spiritual distance remained. At sixty-five, I stopped trying to imitate them. And I finally did what I should have done from the beginning: I sat at the feet of Jesus with my own questions-and with the questions of the people around me.

Author: Antonio (Peinha) Ferreira Santos
ISBN-13: 9798245329307
Publisher: Independently Published
Language: English
Published: 01/23/2026
Pages: 252
Format: Paperback
Weight: 0.98lbs
Size: 10.00h x 7.00w x 0.53d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0662/2982/9887/files/img_2f36bf64-fc1a-4753-b503-29ebebf46755.jpg?v=1778741494
https://www.whiterainbookhouse.com/products/the-incomparable-jesus-antonio-peinha-ferreira-santos-9798245329307
