A result of extensive field work in southern Veracruz, Mexico during 1960 and 1962, this pioneering biological work is now in print for the first time. The Sierra de Tuxtla, a small isolated volcanic mountain area near the Gulf coast of southern Veracruz, Mexico, affords excellent conditions for biogeographical investigations. This study describes the manner in which physical and human factors have influenced native vegetation, nontransient avifauna and larger forest mammals in this tropical region. Physical factors considered include geology, land configuration, climate, drainage and soils; human factors examined include population, settlement and forms of land use.

Robert F. Andrle conducted pioneering biological work in southern Veracruz and Guatemala, much in association with his Ph.D., which he obtained from Louisiana State University in 1964. He went on to a long career at the Buffalo Museum of Science in Buffalo, New York. He has secured natural history specimens for the museum since 1948. Since the 1980s, he has professionally consulted on various projects involving the museum and its nature preserve and has led natural history tours in the United States, Canada, Latin America and Africa. He is currently a Fellow of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences (founder of the Buffalo Museum of Science) and a Research Fellow of the museum. His most prominent research there is the Atlas of Breeding Birds in New York State (Andrle and Carroll 1988).
