A Bullet Through the Window: The Detlev Rohwedder Murder, the Red Army Faction, and Germany's Greatest Post-Cold War Mystery (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798189579196)

Who really killed Germany's most powerful economic reformer in 1991?

On Easter Monday, 1991, a sniper fired three shots through a bedroom window in a quiet Düsseldorf suburb - killing Detlev Rohwedder, the man tasked with rebuilding East Germany's entire economy after the Berlin Wall fell, and wounding his wife beside him. A letter left at the scene claimed the killing for the Red Army Faction. More than three decades later, no one has ever been charged. No trial has ever been held. And under German law, the file will never legally close.

A Bullet Through the Window is the definitive account of one of modern Europe's most significant unsolved political assassinations - a true crime investigation that reads like a thriller because every detail in it actually happened.

This book reconstructs the case hour by hour and decade by decade: the minute-by-minute events of the murder itself; the untold story of Rohwedder, the reluctant technocrat handed the impossible job of privatizing an entire collapsed economy; the toxic, record-breaking hatred aimed at the Treuhandanstalt, the agency he led; and the shadowy final years of the Red Army Faction, a terrorist organization the world thought it understood - until German reunification exposed its secret, decades-long relationship with the Stasi.

You'll go inside the strange confession letter signed in the name of an RAF operative who had already been dead for sixteen years. You'll follow the decade-long manhunt that ended in a deadly 1993 shootout at a German train station. You'll examine the 2001 DNA breakthrough that connected a known RAF operative to the crime scene - and discover exactly why prosecutors still weren't able to close the case, even with a name in hand. And you'll meet Hergard Rohwedder: a retired judge, a survivor of the same attack that killed her husband, and the woman who spent nearly thirty years building the most credible alternative theory this case has ever produced - right up until her death in 2020, weeks before she was finally set to tell her story to a global audience.

This is not a book that manufactures a tidy ending the evidence doesn't support. It's a rigorously researched, honestly written account that takes every theory seriously - the official RAF narrative, the Stasi hypothesis, the missing East German party fortune - and shows you exactly what the evidence proves, what it merely suggests, and what remains, deliberately and permanently, unresolved.

If you're drawn to unsolved political crimes, Cold War history, or true stories where the official record and the real truth may not be the same thing, this is the book you've been looking for.
