The author has not only studied aging, but has managed assisted living communities, as well as experienced the caregiving role for family members. Her academic background and professional experience coupled with her personal experience in caregiving make this book valuable for both professional caregivers and family members providing care for a loved one. Caregiving can be stressful, and often is; however, with the information in this book, caregiving can be more enjoyable for both caregiver and patient. Mary A. Johnson, Ph.D., holds a B.A. in Psychology from The University of Michigan-Dearborn, M.A. in Family Studies and Ph.D. in Psychological Foundations of Education, with a doctoral minor in Aging Studies, from The University of New Mexico. She is a Licensed Clinical Counselor in New Mexico and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Oregon, currently in private practice. During her career, she taught classes at The University of New Mexico, worked in nursing homes in various capacities, and managed a retirement apartment community and two assisted living communities. She has published in magazines, newspapers, and academic journals, and presented at local, regional, and national conferences. She has first-hand experience with caregiving, having been responsible for her mother's and her late husband's care in their later years.
