Clarice Mondo Cooks was born in Modesto, California, and raised in Ripon, California, where she attained her early education. A lifelong bibliophile and dedicated public servant, she holds a bachelor's degree in library science from San Jose State University and worked for the City of San Mateo Public Library for forty-one years, first as the reference librarian and later as the city librarian. She currently resides in San Mateo.

Thomas J. Shephard Sr. was born and raised in Modesto and earned both a bachelor's degree in political science and a juris doctorate degree from University of California at Berkeley. He currently resides in Stockton, California, where he has practiced law at Neumiller & Deardslee for more than fifty years. Shephard is proud father to four grown children-Katherine Weiner, Thomas J. Shephard Jr., Clarice Shephard, and Marjorie Hart-and is loving grandfather to seven, including his youngest grandchild, Peter.
