In one of the most long-lasting and influential careers in economics, Anna Schwartz has made profound contributions to statistics, economic history, monetary policy, and international monetary arrangements.
Coauthor with Milton Friedman of A Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960, Schwartz transformed our understanding of the causes of the Great Depression and radically altered our outlook on the effects of monetary policy. Born in 1915, a graduate of Barnard and Columbia, she has worked at the National Bureau of Economic Research in New York City since 1941.
In conversation with Bill Jersey, Schwartz reflects on a lifetime of first-hand experiences in economics, offering critical insights on the policies of Roosevelt and Reagan, Milton Friedman, and the recession of 2008.
