Franz Theodor Csokor (1885-1969), an influential Viennese dramatist, brought continuity and unity to twentieth-century Austrian literature. His best known dramas are contained in the European Trilogy, which appears here for the first time in English translation. Occupied Territory (1930), 3 November 1918 (1936), and The Prodigal Son (1947) capture critical turning points of political, social, and psychological upheaval in the history of Central and Eastern Europe during the first half of the century. Nationalism, socialism, ethnicity, and fanaticism are explored in dramatic form and the issues that arise are as timely and crucial today as they were 50 years ago when the dramas first appeared.

The Editor: Katherine McHugh Lichliter is the Associate Director of the Salzburg Seminar and Director of the Seminar's Vienna Office. The Salzburg Seminar is an international institute that conducts interdisciplinary courses in international affairs, economics, and law for mid-career professionals. Dr. Lichliter received her Ph.D. from Brandeis University following studies at the University of Massachusetts, the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, and the University of Vienna, where she was a Fulbright-Hays Research Fellow. She has taught at Brandeis University, and her interests center on European institutions and European integration, as well as Central and Eastern Europe.
