The absurd and unjust features of England's education system have been hiding in plain sight. They include: an inspection system that confers imaginary powers on inspectors (and is not designed to help schools to improve); a range of devices for assessment and 'accountability' that are designed to guarantee failure for a sizeable proportion of children and of schools; and a dysfunctional special educational needs system that defines need only in terms of the national curriculum, rather than personal learning development - and simply doesn't do what the law says that it does. This is a system built around a national curriculum that extinguishes children's curiosity and treats many as expendable ballast. It ignores teachers' professional experience and suppresses their creativity and ingenuity - which is why the most appropriate collective noun for a group of teachers is 'a disenchantment'.
