A Generation Apart (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781520186849)

An unforgettable story written by a talented new writer who weaves the story of his grandfather, Jack Fowler, and the young Bobby Michel, two boys looking to become men during very different times in American history. Jack decides to risk it all and join the Great War before it's too late, leaving his beloved girl and Colorado mountains behind. He begins writing his sweetheart, Mabel, back home, enters the war in France, and comes back a changed man. When he returns, he finds that everyone has moved on and he must figure out where he fits in the new reality. Jack and Mabel's letters open a window to their evolving relationship. Split-time to the start of the 1970s, Bobby's world is rocked by family tumult, but he finds a measure of stability beside his grandpa, Jack Fowler, who teaches Bobby about love and work, and ultimately, how to be true to himself despite external pressures. Judge, 25th Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards wrote, "In A Generation Apart, we are presented with a dense and richly plotted historical tale that combines vital threads from two time periods in a way the reinforces the storytelling throughout. Overall, the writing carries a tinge of nostalgia, a ready emotionality, and an ability to be both present and distant - to scrutinize action and decision while events unfold." A Generation Apart is a literary split-time novel based on a true story. If you like historicals set during World War I or the 1970s, coming of age tales, and heartwarming stories, then you'll love this Robert Michel's lyrically written and artfully composed debut.
