A History of Chinese Rice Culture (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781049801568)

The cultivation of rice has been intertwined with the foundation and development of Chinese civilization for millennia, with the excavation of grains dating back nearly 10,000 years. Yet, a close investigation into this legacy has been found lacking. History of Chinese Rice Culture seeks to bridge this gap in the literature by bringing to the forefront the cultural and historical elements tied to this phenomenon.

Agronomy experts and researchers You Xiuling and Zeng Xiongsheng utilise existing literature, archaeological analysis, and ethnographic materials to unearth the long history of rice cultivation in China and its various regions. They reflect upon its many strengths, including the prowess of the grain to meet rising contextual pressures, and simultaneously prompt caution by deliberating upon its negative impacts, such as on the environment. Arising from a critical re-evaluation of the decade of rich research that has taken place since You's publication of History of Chinese Rice Cultivation, this book broadens the perspective from a focus on science and technology to offer a more in-depth and comprehensive cultural history.

History of Chinese Rice Culture will be of interest to science and technology experts, social and cultural theorists, social historians, and anyone looking for a deep dive into the intersections of food, regional culture, and human history.
