The Civil War left the South devastated. Many Confederate soldiers returned home only to find their families destroyed and their land taken over by carpetbaggers. Confederate money was worthless. The soldiers could not pay taxes levied on their land, and if they resisted they were labeled renegades, outlaws, and killers. In some instances, those taking over the land used the power of the conquering army to force their will upon the vanquished. For many, the only thing left was to flee into the wild, unsettled West and hope to rebuild their lives.
Tyree Terel was such a man. He escaped into Indian Territory, where he helped a beautiful girl and her mother save their ranch from a greedy tyrant.
