I am reminded of an incident during World War II when the Allied forces were mapping bullet holes in the aircraft that returned to base to determine areas for reinforcements. The Romanian mathematician Abraham Wald, then teaching in Columbia University, asked them to focus instead on the aircraft that did not return and reinforce areas that had no bullet marks on the returning aircraft! We tend to suffer from a phenomenon called "survival deviation" where one focuses on things that have survived rather than on things that have not.This pandemic is teaching us many a lesson on focus, adaptability, empathy, adventurism, curiosity and celebration.
