Martha Warriner Jarrett was getting ready to enjoy a new chapter of her life in Bakersfield, California, with her husband. She didn't realize that this new chapter would include a devastating diagnosis and the discovery of the horrible truth behind her late husband's death.
After being rushed to the emergency room, Jarrett was diagnosed with HIV. It had been left untreated for so long that it was now considered full-blown AIDS.
In this powerful new memoir of disease and recovery, Jarrett looks back on her life with new insight and strength. She includes details about her childhood, education, and marriage to her husband Alan. Jarrett was shocked when he died after twenty-five years spent together. She now realizes he died of AIDS-related pneumonia. The doctors didn't think to test a seventy-seven-year-old man for the disease.
Jarrett was the lucky one. Not only did the doctors diagnose her in time, but she had a companion to support and love her through her recovery. Jarrett reminisces about her first meeting with her current husband, Ronald, and their long, on-again, off-again courtship. Now free of AIDS and adjusting to life as HIV positive, she looks forward to what the future holds.
Martha Warriner Jarrett first discovered her medical condition after moving to Bakersfield, California, in 2012. She went into stage-three hypertensive crisis and acute respiratory failure. Her doctors discovered that not only was she HIV positive, but the disease had progressed to AIDS. It was a struggle to recover, but Jarrett is doing well and adjusting to life as HIV positive. Her viral load is nearly zero, and her CD4 level has returned to near normal.
Jarrett's career began in advertising. She graduated from Pasadena High School in Pasadena, California, and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. After eight years in the ad industry, Jarrett went back to school at Loyola University School of Law in Los Angeles, California. She graduated magna cum laude and worked as a bankruptcy lawyer in Los Angeles and Riverside, California. Jarrett now enjoys her retirement with her husband Ronald in Bakersfield.
