A Sumerian Palace And The "A" Cemetery At Kish, Mesopotamia (Part Ii) (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9789354305443)

A vivid, indispensable account of an ancient city uncovered. A foundational study of Sumer. Ernest Mackay's A Sumerian Palace and the 'A' Cemetery at Kish, Part II, presents a rigorous archaeological site report that documents palace excavation findings and the ancient burial practices of the Kish archaeological site. Grounded in careful field observation, the work sits at the heart of ancient mesopotamian archaeology and sumerian civilization study, illuminating urban planning, craft production and funerary ritual during the early dynastic period of mesopotamia third millennium bce. Mackay writes with clear economy; technical detail is set alongside the human traces of life and death, making the text useful to both specialist readers and the general reader drawn to near eastern history. Historically significant as an early, comprehensive account of Kish excavations, the book shaped subsequent approaches to stratigraphy and interpretation and remains a touchstone for comparative ancient cultures. Researchers and instructors will value the methodical descriptions of stratigraphy and artefact typologies, which support comparative work across Mesopotamia and enrich courses on the early dynastic period. Casual readers encounter vivid, concrete detail - the layout of palace precincts, the arrangement of burials, the objects that passed between life and death - offering an immediate sense of near eastern history without technical overload. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Librarians, curators and collectors will prize this restored title for both its historical value and its readable presentation. As much at home on a university reading list or an academic reference collection as on a collector's shelf, this edition preserves Mackay's scholarly precision while making the material accessible for contemporary study: an indispensable university archaeology resource and a rewarding read for anyone interested in the material foundations of civilisation.
