David Townsend Hoopes was born and raised on the East Coast of the United States. He spent his youth rambling the fields of his family farm in West Chester, Pennsylvania. As a young teen he lived on Annamarie Island in Florida where he combed the beaches and waded the shorelines. These experiences created a deep love for the natural world which have remained an integral part of his being. David went to undergraduate school at the University of Alaska and graduated when Alaska was still a territory. During his college years grew to love the beautiful Alaska wilderness and the wildlife it nourished. After completing his PhD in Fisheries Biology at the University of Iowa, he returned to Alaska and enjoyed a career in Fisheries. David co-authored his first volume of Haiku "Alaska in Haiku", while living in Juneau, Alaska in 1972. For the past 30 years David has enjoyed the Pacific Northwest, living first on a small ranch in Idaho and later in the beautiful San Juan Islands. He and his wife now reside in Sequim on Washington states Olympic Peninsula, where he continues to write Haiku and enjoy regular excursions into the majestic Olympic National Park, rain forests and ocean beaches. During salmon season he can frequently be found on the riverbank with his fishing pole or Haiku notebook in hand.
