William N. Porter (1849-1929) compiled and translated the 365 epigrams in this book. There is no biographical information provided with any of the several collections of Japanese verse which he translated. The editor, David Abbey, is a retired professor of Applied Psychology (University of Toronto)who has had a long-standing interest in Japanese poetry and art and in this book he has brought together Porter's work with images from the US Library of Congress digital collections.
