Adivasi Aakar: Traditional Ecological Knowledge in India's SDG Journey (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798291411360)

In the urgent global race to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, what if India's most powerful and innovative resource has been hiding in plain sight? Adivasi Aakar: Traditional Ecological Knowledge in India's SDG Journey is a groundbreaking and timely book that unveils this extraordinary truth, presenting a compelling and inspiring vision for a truly sustainable future. The title itself, meaning "to shape the Adivasi future," frames the book's powerful thesis: that the ancestral wisdom of India's indigenous communities is not a relic of the past, but a living, dynamic, and essential blueprint for national progress.
This book embarks on a breathtaking journey into the heart of Adivasi India, revealing the sheer sophistication of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). You will be transported to the verdant hills of Kerala to witness the intricate science behind Matta Krishi (shifting cultivation), a practice that masterfully balances crop diversity, soil health, and forest regeneration-embodying the principles of SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) long before the term was coined. The book illuminates how this deep, symbiotic relationship with nature is the bedrock of Adivasi identity and resilience.
From these vibrant grassroots realities, the narrative expands to navigate the complex national stage. It demystifies the landmark Biological Diversity Act and delves into the critical struggles for knowledge rights, exploring how communities are using legal tools like People's Biodiversity Registers to protect their heritage from biopiracy. This is a story of resilience, a fight for recognition in the face of systemic challenges.
But Adivasi Aakar brilliantly shatters the myth of indigenous communities as passive victims. It celebrates a powerful wave of grassroots innovation, showcasing how Adivasi ingenuity is tackling modern challenges head-on. Discover how communities are pioneering village-scale solar grids and micro-hydro projects in remote hills, bringing the promise of SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) to life. Learn how the simple, yet revolutionary, redesign of traditional cookstoves is transforming the health of women and protecting local forests. This is a testament to Adivasi agency-a story of problem-solvers and innovators leading the charge.
Ultimately, this book is a visionary and urgent call to action. It charts a bold course for the future-the "Adivasi Aakar"-where TEK is seamlessly integrated into national plans, celebrated through cross-cultural exchanges, and ethically amplified by digital platforms. It argues that by empowering Adivasi communities to lead their own development, India can unlock a powerful pathway to achieving its SDG targets in a way that is equitable, just, and truly sustainable.
Essential reading for policymakers, scientists, activists, and every citizen invested in India's future, Adivasi Aakar is more than a book; it is a transformative perspective. It is a celebration of a living wisdom that holds the key not only to preserving a precious heritage, but to building a thriving, resilient, and brighter future for all.
