Afghanistan in U.S. Policy: Pages of History (1919-1973) (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798246491447)

How did Afghanistan become strategically important to the United States long before it turned into a global crisis?

This book provides a meticulously researched and historically grounded analysis of U.S. - Afghan relations from 1919 to 1973, tracing the political, diplomatic, and economic interactions that shaped Afghanistan's modern position in international affairs decades before the Soviet invasion and subsequent conflicts.

Based on extensive archival research, diplomatic correspondence, declassified government materials, memoirs, and contemporary analytical sources, the study reconstructs how American foreign policy toward Afghanistan evolved across changing global contexts - from early diplomatic engagement and development assistance to Cold War strategic calculations influenced by regional dynamics in South and Central Asia.

Rather than portraying Afghanistan as a passive object of great power rivalry, the book highlights the role of Afghan political leadership, internal socio-economic conditions, and regional pressures in shaping bilateral relations. The analysis reveals a complex decision-making environment in which local agency and international strategy intersected in often overlooked ways.

A central strength of this work lies in its consistent reliance on primary sources, allowing the author to reassess established interpretations and, where necessary, challenge simplified or retrospective narratives. By situating U.S. - Afghan relations within a broader historical and geopolitical framework, the book offers valuable insight into the structural foundations of later developments.
