When Hardy realized that it was safer to cross the desert than stay and possibly get caught by the cannibals that were prevalent where he was hiding he still had to get food and water for the trip. He knew the desert and he knew when to collect the water, while the cannibals were drunk. He left in the darkness so that he was too far into the desert for anyone to consider following him. He dragged a sled with his possessions on and only stopped when it was too hot to go on. He was out of food and water and wondering what to do when he came to a crashed plane. By distilling water from the cooling system he was able to move on, now hoping for a miracle. It was dark when a scream tore through the dark night air.
