After the Battle: Military Salvage, Recovery and Reuse in the Second World War (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798189694356)

The battle was over-but the work had only begun.

Behind every advancing army stood a largely forgotten force of mechanics, recovery crews, salvage workers, engineers, drivers, armourers, divers, and workshop personnel. Their task was to enter the wreckage left behind, recover damaged machinery, clear roads and harbours, reclaim valuable materials, and return broken equipment to service.

Without them, armies would have quickly run out of vehicles, weapons, spare parts, and transport.

After the Battle reveals the hidden world of wartime salvage and recovery during the Second World War. From the deserts of North Africa and the mud of the Eastern Front to the beaches of Normandy, the jungles of Burma, and the devastated cities of Europe, these units worked wherever machinery had broken down, burned, sunk, or been abandoned.

Inside this book, you will discover:

How damaged tanks and trucks were recovered under fire

Why cannibalisation kept entire armoured formations moving

How British REME, American Ordnance units, Australian salvage companies, Soviet repair teams, and other Allied organisations operated

The wreckers, tractors, transporters, and armoured recovery vehicles that made battlefield recovery possible

How captured German, Italian, Japanese, and Soviet equipment was inspected, reused, or dismantled

The dangerous work of clearing mines, booby traps, ammunition, aircraft wrecks, and sunken ships

How salvage continued after 1945 as roads, railways, ports, farms, and cities were rebuilt

What collectors and restorers can learn from workshop markings, replacement components, paint layers, field repairs, and rebuild plates

The Second World War was not won by production alone.

It was won by the people who refused to allow damaged machinery to remain lost.

Their work transformed wreckage into transport, broken vehicles into spare parts, and abandoned battlefields into the foundations of the next advance.

After the Battle restores these forgotten men and machines to their rightful place in military history.
