After The Heart Attack: What Surviving Really Means (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798242421745)

Surviving a heart attack is not the end of the story.

Many people leave hospital alive but profoundly changed, living with fear, anxiety, and a loss of trust in their bodies. These psychological effects are common, yet rarely explained. When these psychological effects remain unnamed, survivors often perceive themselves as incapable of coping.

This book explores what happens after the emergency is over.

Written by a former NHS nurse who survived a major heart attack and subsequent cardiac complications, After the Heart Attack offers a calm, honest account of recovery that goes beyond physical healing. It explains why fear can increase after discharge, why anxiety and panic are common, and why returning to "normal" is often harder than expected.

Blending lived experience with professional insight, the book covers:

• The book clarifies why people often miss or misunderstand heart attacks.

• What do hospital care and discharge feel like on the inside?

• the psychological impact of survival, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress

• cardiac rehabilitation and why it is about confidence, not just exercise

• medication, lifestyle change, and living with ongoing risk

This is not a sob story or a medical textbook. It is a clear, compassionate guide for anyone trying to understand the mental and emotional aftermath of a heart attack.

Whether you are a survivor, a family member, or a healthcare professional, this book gives language to experiences that are often left unspoken.
