AI Planning and Decision-Making: How Intelligent Systems Think Ahead, Compare Choices, and Decide What to Do Next (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781972925393)

Artificial intelligence does more than recognize patterns and generate responses. Increasingly capable AI systems can evaluate options, work toward defined goals, anticipate possible outcomes, and select actions based on available information. But how does an intelligent system determine what to do next?

AI Planning and Decision-Making: How Intelligent Systems Think Ahead, Compare Choices, and Decide What to Do Next provides an accessible introduction to the concepts behind machine planning and decision-making.

Written for students, educators, families, and readers interested in AI literacy, this book explores how intelligent systems use goals, actions, possible outcomes, constraints, feedback, search strategies, predictions, and evaluation methods to make decisions. Readers learn how AI can compare different paths, respond when conditions change, manage uncertainty, and use information from previous outcomes to improve future choices.

The book also examines the important differences between human and machine decision-making. AI systems do not make choices in the same way people do. Their decisions depend on objectives, data, algorithms, models, rules, computational processes, and the environments in which they operate.

As AI systems become more capable and autonomous, responsible decision-making becomes increasingly important. This book introduces students to human oversight, safety, transparency, accountability, bias, risk, and the importance of keeping people involved when AI decisions can affect individuals or society.

Part of the IntelliGloss AI Education Series, AI Planning and Decision-Making helps readers move beyond simply using AI tools to understanding the concepts that influence how intelligent systems evaluate possibilities and determine what to do next.

Clear explanations and practical examples make complex ideas approachable while building a foundation for understanding more advanced topics in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, AI agents, and Artificial General Intelligence.

The future of AI will depend not only on what intelligent systems can learn, but also on how responsibly they can use that knowledge to plan, choose, and act.
