AI under Suspicion of Art: Polemic in five Acts (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9783384898524)

In his polemic AI under Suspicion of Art, Hermann Selchow examines the far-reaching consequences of artificial intelligence for the contemporary understanding of art and literary practice.

The author criticises the current debate as superficial and shows how moral prejudice often overlays the actual aesthetic quality of a work. Drawing on the history of ideas from Aristotle to Barthes, he exposes the modern ideal of the genius creator as a Romantic construct and argues instead for a new concept of authorship grounded in conscious decision and human accountability.

Selchow strictly distinguishes between a soulless AI flood and the responsible use of the technology as dialogue partner and tool. Ultimately the text calls for measuring the quality of a work not by its technical origin but by the depth of artistic judgement. For the author, AI thus takes its place in a historical chain of upheavals that extend the nature of art without destroying its human core.
