The United States government also claimed that they killed him in 1993 in the city of Medellin. If all this was true, then why did the US government asked me, Brian (Chance) Chase, the author, in 1997 if Pablo Escobar was still alive after they had made all of these spectacular claims about his illegal yet government sanctioned assassination in 1993. After I retired from the cocaine business, I served a 15 year prison sentence on cocaine distribution, money laundering, theft and exportation of stolen aircraft, and murder charges. I paid for my crimes not only by going to prison but also by paying a toll on other very personal and emotional levels that broke my heart forever, but that I won't go into just now. It was the idea of two FBI agents that were involved in my case that I should write this book. They told me that 'we' had made history, and that I, a gringo, had penetrated the Cartel faster and deeper than any gringo they had on record at the time. It took me two or three months of lying in my bunk, thinking and looking at my jail cell ceiling before I finally decided to write because I came to the conclusion that I had a good story to tell.
