Bruce Autry, an eighth-generation Autry, wrote this novel ten years ago and has let it rest until now. Mr. Autry, born in the same North Carolina community as the novel's protagonist, has made his own journey to Texas seeking a better life than he had experienced in other places. Having been a poet since he was seven years old, Autry employs the tropes of epic poetry as well as the emotional hyperbole of romantic poetry in his prose.
