Alter Ego: The Complete Graphic Novel

Before every comic fan dreamed of becoming a superhero, one teenager actually got the chance.

From legendary comics writer Roy Thomas (The Avengers, Conan the Barbarian, All-Star Squadron) and artist Ron Harris comes one of the most imaginative superhero graphic novels of the independent comics boom: Alter Ego. Originally published by First Comics in 1986, this acclaimed four-issue miniseries is collected here in its entirety for the first time in a deluxe edition. The volume also features Roy Thomas's new introduction, Ron Harris's afterword, and an extensive bonus sketchbook showcasing the creative process behind the series.

Robert Lindsay is an ordinary teenager whose greatest passion is comic books. When a mysterious blue mask emerges from the pages of a strange comic, Robert is thrust into an impossible adventure where the heroes and villains of the Golden Age come alive, history itself begins to unravel, and the boundary between fiction and reality disappears.

To survive, Robert must become Alter Ego-a hero inspired by the classic champions of comics' earliest era-and battle through worlds where forgotten legends, pulp heroes, and wartime villains are frighteningly real. Along the way he discovers that imagination is far more powerful-and far more dangerous-than he ever believed.

Equal parts coming-of-age adventure, superhero epic, and heartfelt love letter to the Golden Age of comics, Alter Ego celebrates the wonder of discovering comics for the first time while delivering action, mystery, humor, and multiversal spectacle. Roy Thomas's encyclopedic knowledge of comic book history and Ron Harris's dynamic storytelling combine to create a graphic novel that remains as inventive today as when it first appeared.

Whether you're a lifelong fan of classic superheroes, a student of comics history, or simply looking for a thrilling adventure unlike any other, Alter Ego is an unforgettable journey into the power of stories-and the heroes who inspire us.
