She defends her stance by bringing up a moral issue. Arguments and differences of opinion create a gulf. The climax of the story brings a hateful separation. But destiny has stored something else for them. The series of anecdotes and monologues of Rita and Amit unravel the subdued respect and love they nourished under the guise of their apparent intolerance for each other. Rita's rise to fame paves the opportunity for the two to be united once again rather amazingly. It is a matter of chance and a twist of fate. And the crux of the novel emerges with a happy tone that happens only at the end.
