One morning while Ambrose is performing his daily morning patrol of the barn, he meets Annabelle and a close bond quickly forms that changes their lives. Hubbard, Ambrose's sidekick looks up to Ambrose and tries to emulate him with sometimes disastrous results. The bond between the three mice leads Ambrose and his friends on some harrowing adventures. Captain Jack, a horse in the barn who is a friend of the three mice is scheduled to race at the county fair against Midnight, a very mean black stallion. A mutual dislike between the two is shown on the race track that leads to a nail biting finish.

Kenneth Schnetzler is a writer and a musician. The inspiration for the book came from the barn his horse was kept at. He is a retired insurance manager who lives with his wife Irene in a suburb outside of Chicago, Illinois, and is a father of three children. Kane Schnetzler is a speech teacher at a local college. While not spending time with school activities he plays guitar, enjoys bicycling and riding horses. He lives in a suburb outside of Chicago, Illinois.
