American Eccentrics: Mavericks, Misfits, and Visionaries (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781105229084)

America has always been shaped by people who refused to follow the expected path.

In American Eccentrics: Mavericks, Misfits, and Visionaries, award-winning historian and journalist Brian D'Ambrosio explores the lives of nearly fifty remarkable Americans whose ideas, ambitions, and determination left lasting marks on the nation. Some became famous. Others were largely forgotten. All lived extraordinary lives.

Meet Ralph Teetor, the blind inventor whose ingenuity led to cruise control; Edgar Rice Burroughs, a serial job-hopper who created Tarzan after years of failure; Granville Woods, the prolific inventor whose innovations helped transform railroad transportation; James Bowie, the frontier adventurer whose name became forever linked to the Alamo; and O. Henry, the master storyteller who turned personal setbacks into a literary career celebrated for its wit and surprise endings.

Along the way, readers encounter inventors, artists, entrepreneurs, reformers, athletes, frontier legends, musicians, and dreamers whose stories are as surprising as they are inspiring.

From the creator of the graham cracker to the father of basketball, from Johnny Appleseed to Carry A. Nation, from George Eastman to Buddy Holly, these biographies reveal the grit, imagination, and individuality that have long fueled the American experience.

Richly researched and engagingly written, American Eccentrics is a celebration of originality in all its forms. Filled with unforgettable characters, unexpected turns, and little-known stories from the nation's past, it offers a fresh look at the people who challenged convention, pursued unlikely dreams, and helped shape America.

Their paths were unusual. Their ambitions were often improbable. Together, they offer a different way of looking at American history.
