Ginger Berry and Jon Moore take a shine to each other when she goes to work as a vacation replacement at the Cape Cod radio station where he hosts the morning talk show. Jon stymies a bank robber trying to hijack his car with Ginger in it. Ginger marches in the July Fourth parade. They umpire a hilarious Police-Fire Department softball game. They drive to Boston to watch the surprising Red Sox at Fenway Park. Exploring the town's neighborhoods on a tandem bike, they discover a teenaged harmonica virtuoso and are waylaid by three punks smoking marijuana and wielding a baseball bat. You'll also meet talk show caller Roger Plumadore, who has either the town's best memory or its best imagination, maybe both. Radio salesman Hal Sims, who "could sell tuxedos to penguins." And Luvina Freitas, who used to date Jon and who introduces Ginger to Portuguese cooking. All done with lots of laughs and lots of suspense along the way. You'll be especially intrigued by the "unusual arrangement" dictated by Jon's and Ginger's old-fashioned senses of morality.

Durham Caldwell found out early that he liked to make people laugh - and that he was pretty good at it. Growing up in the Cape Cod town of Falmouth, Mass., he wrote for the humor pages of his junior high school magazine. After he'd broken up his science class with one too many wisecracks, the teacher told him he was the rudest young man he'd ever seen. At Columbia University, he produced a comedy-variety show for the campus radio station. In his first radio job - in Gardner, Mass., "chair city of the world" - he produced a show called "Chair City Varieties." Then he got sidetracked. Leaving comedy behind him, he made a name for himself in radio and television news. Street reporter, anchorman, election night reporter, editorial writer, documentary producer; news director for TV/40 in Springfield, Mass., for 24 years; winner of numerous awards including UPI's best television news story award for 1983. His first book, the 2009 historical romance "Tumultuous Affairs," started out as a serious look at politics but also ended up with lots of laughs. His second book, the 2012 novel "Betty Sue's Homecoming," began as the story of a three-year-old girl gone missing who comes home 27 years later, serious stuff but also permeated with laughter.
