Ancient Medicine: Hippocrates, Galen, and Two Thousand Years of Being Confidently Wrong (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798907140370)

When someone finally opened human bodies and published the differences, the medical establishment did not conclude that Galen had been wrong. It concluded that the human body must have changed since Galen's day.

Galen of Pergamon never dissected a human being. Roman law and custom forbade it, so he opened pigs, sheep, oxen, and Barbary macaques - and described what he found with such completeness and such confidence that Europe spent fourteen hundred years mistaking it for a description of itself. When a straight human thigh bone on a dissection table contradicted the text, one of Europe's most celebrated anatomists replied that centuries of narrow trousers must have reshaped the femur. Faced with a choice between the authority and the evidence, he chose the authority - and concluded that the bodies were wrong.

Yet the tradition that got nearly every mechanism wrong could couch a cataract with a bronze needle and cut a bladder stone out of a patient in under a minute. Its clinicians invented the honest case record - writing down what happened to each patient, day by day, including the ones who died. Its professional ethics are still recited at medical school graduations. And for roughly two generations in Alexandria, when human dissection was briefly permitted, two Greek anatomists made discoveries nobody would match for fifteen hundred years - until the window closed and their findings survived only as quotations in other men's books.

Ancient Medicine runs from Egyptian surgical papyri through Hippocrates, the four humours, the Alexandrian window, Roman surgery and army hospitals, Galen's magnificent wrong system, the Arabic physicians who preserved and sharpened it, and the medieval universities where the body was checked against the book rather than the book against the body. It is a history of ideas about the body - and a history of authority: how a system becomes unfalsifiable, how a great man's error becomes load-bearing, and why fourteen centuries of intelligent people did not simply look.

What you'll learn:

• Why the four humours were a genuinely good theory - comprehensive, internally consistent, and impossible to test
• What Herophilus and Erasistratus discovered in Alexandria, and why it stayed lost for fifteen centuries
• How Roman surgeons performed cataract couching, lithotomy, and trepanation - and the honest survival odds
• What Galen actually got right: the public experiments that proved arteries carry blood and the brain commands the voice
• How the tradition travelled through Baghdad and the medieval schools - and why even recorded doubts changed nothing
• Why it was Harvey's arithmetic, not two centuries of better anatomy, that finally broke the system

This book is for you if:

• You want the history behind the Hippocratic Oath, the four humours, and bloodletting - told as an argument, not a parade of dates
• You read history of science for the question of how disciplines correct themselves, and how they fail to
• You want ancient people taken seriously - neither mocked for being wrong nor romanticised as secretly right

They were wrong about nearly everything, useful anyway, and unable to find out - for fourteen hundred years. This is the story of how that happens.
