Between these pages you will find some crazy critters whose antics are sure to make you smile. There are some stories to ponder for a while and two tall tales just for fun. Living close to nature from the old forests and cold lakes of a north central Minnesota to the deep south of the Florida panhandle, then to the Black Hills of South Dakota, here is a sampling of a funny, simple life. Like characters in a play, there are freakish fish, evil squirrels, and lots of dogs. Then, there is the honor of knowing some of the First People on White Earth Reservation, the elders who know much; whose first priority is to pass on that wisdom to their children and to teach the truth wherever they may go.

Shirley was raised on a little resort in Minnesota. Like a restless warrior, wandering but never lost, Shirley has traveled across the United States more than once, has lived mostly in north-central Minnesota, but also Florida, California, and the Black Hills of South Dakota. She has had many adventures and misadventures. Shirley says that the ability to laugh at herself gives her strength to make it to the next escapade-which is, of course, always hiding around the next curve. Shirley has spent most of her life as a woman-of-the woods, living close to critters of all kinds-and even some human beings.
