Ancient Weapons (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798248147601)

Weapons survive where many other traces of the past do not. They are recovered from graves, riverbeds, hoards, fortresses, and battlefields. They appear in reliefs, manuscripts, inventories, and law codes. Across cultures and centuries, they served not only as tools of violence, but as markers of training, obligation, and authority.
Ancient Weapons approaches these objects with a clear purpose: to explain what historical weapons were, how they were made, and how they were actually used.

Rather than relying on legend or romanticized tradition, Nelson McKeeby grounds every discussion in physical evidence and documented practice. Entries focus on observable features-blade geometry, mass, balance, construction, and wear-alongside archaeological finds, surviving museum examples, period imagery, and written sources. Cultural meaning is addressed where it is directly supported, but never allowed to replace material reality. First published in 1992, this edition is expanded and updated.

The book covers:
- Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age technologies
- Forging methods, pattern welding, and historical steels
- Swords, spears, polearms, axes, flails, impact weapons, bows, and crossbows
- European, Mediterranean, Near Eastern, and selected Asian and Southeast Asian arms
- Museums and collections essential to serious study

Ancient Weapons is not a catalog of every weapon ever made, nor a typological argument about perfect classification. It is a working reference for people who want to understand why particular weapon forms existed and what problems they were meant to solve.

Whether you are writing fiction, designing games, creating art, or studying historical combat, this book provides a reliable foundation built on archaeology, museum collections, and documented sources.
