ANGKOR, Walking Through a Civilization Carved in Stone (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9791122125634)

A thousand years ago, what did the kings and people see standing here? Not a mere landscape, but a vision of the new world they sought to create.

ANGKOR, Walking Through a Civilization Carved in Stone is a literary journey through the temples of Angkor - Angkor Wat, the enigmatic faces of the Bayon, the jungle-strangled ruins of Ta Prohm, the intricate carvings of Banteay Srei, and the quiet grandeur of Preah Khan, Banteay Kdei, and Phnom Bakheng. Written by a Korean author who has lived and worked in Siem Reap, Cambodia, this collection of humanities essays moves beyond guidebook facts to ask what these stones still say to those who walk among them today.

Blending history, art, religion, and personal reflection, the book traces the rise and fall of the Khmer Empire alongside the everyday life of contemporary Siem Reap, where ancient devotion and modern survival exist side by side. Each chapter walks through a different temple or theme, uncovering the human longing - for meaning, permanence, and transcendence - carved into every wall and doorway.

Part travelogue, part meditation, part historical essay, this book invites readers to slow down and see one of humanity's greatest architectural and spiritual achievements - not as a monument frozen in the past, but as a civilization still speaking, one stone at a time.

The book unfolds in five parts, moving chronologically and thematically through Angkor Wat, the Bayon, Ta Prohm, Banteay Srei, Preah Khan, Banteay Kdei, and Phnom Bakheng, before closing with reflections on the vanished capital and the living city of Siem Reap that has grown in its place. Each chapter is punctuated by short personal vignettes and supported by more than 130 endnotes drawing on historical and archaeological sources.

The author has lived in Siem Reap, Cambodia since 2018, teaching computer skills, English, origami, and music to local children through a small community classroom. Before settling in Cambodia, he and his wife spent twenty-five years traveling to more than forty countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, performing cultural shows as volunteers. ANGKOR is the fruit of years spent walking these temple grounds not as a tourist passing through, but as a neighbor who stayed.
