Anointed and Established: Reflections on the Books of 1 and 2 Samuel (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798187045600)

Israel wanted a king "like the nations." God gave them one - and when that king's heart proved divided, God gave them another: a shepherd boy who would become Israel's greatest ruler, not because he never failed, but because his heart, again and again, turned back to the LORD.

Anointed and Established is the sixth volume in a continuing devotional commentary series drawn from more than a decade of daily Quiet Time writing and Sunday School classes at First Baptist Church in Dallas. It follows Beginnings (Genesis), Deliverance (Exodus), Consecrated and Tested (Leviticus and Numbers), Remember (Deuteronomy), and Conquest, Failure, and Redemption (Joshua, Judges, and Ruth) into the books of 1 and 2 Samuel - the story of Samuel, Saul, and David, and the pivotal transition of Israel from a nation led by judges to a nation ruled by kings.

Part One, Anointed, traces 1 Samuel: Hannah's prayer and Samuel's calling, Israel's demand for a king, Saul's rise and slow unraveling, and the long years David spent as a fugitive before ever wearing a crown. Part Two, Established, traces 2 Samuel: David's coronation, the Davidic Covenant, his devastating fall with Bathsheba, and the years of family catastrophe and costly restoration that followed. Eunmi's voice is woven throughout, often quieter and more personal, alongside Eugene's.

Each chapter includes:

• A close, readable walk through that section's text, grounded in careful study but written for everyday readers
• Honest engagement with the hardest parts of these two books - Saul's rejection, Doeg's massacre at Nob, David's sin and its ripple of consequence through his household - without flattening them into easy answers
• Cross-references tracing how a theme in Samuel echoes through the Psalms, the Prophets, and the words of Christ
• Reflection and discussion questions after every chapter, sized for a 45-60 minute group session

Whether you are reading through 1 and 2 Samuel for the first time, leading a Bible study, or continuing the journey begun in Genesis, this book offers sixteen chapters of careful, faithful reflection on a single question these two books never stop asking: whose God is He to you?
