Apex: A Novel of the Blindspot World (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798177706757)

He is the god of beasts. Nothing that breathes has ever refused him.

Dante Sanford goes off the books into a dead stretch of the Algerian Sahara, chasing a rumor no scientist will touch: a Barbary lion - a species the world buried decades ago - haunting a settlement the animals refuse to enter. He can read the instinct of anything alive and turn it against itself. He is certain he cannot lose.

The expedition dies around him, one by one, and his gift saves no one.

Then, alone and beyond rescue, Dante learns the true shape of the trap. The starving lion cannot be commanded - hunger drowns every lever he has - and Dante cannot die. It kills him. It feeds. He wakes whole in the sand, and it hunts him again. The master of all that breathes, farmed like livestock by the one beast he cannot outwit, in a desert with no witness and no end.

And every time it eats him, it grows a little more like a man.
